1. Overview of United Airlines’ Reservation Policy

United Airlines: Book United Airlines Flights United Airlines lets you book your trip from here on the website, through the United app or with travel agents. Travel classes The airline all the way from Basic Economy, Economy, Premium Plus, Business, and First class fare. Specific rules for refunds, amendments and upgrades apply to each type of fare.

The Basic Economy seats are the subscription for those students who want a cheap flight but still want to be able to bring a bag and get a seat. You are not allowed to choose a seat in advance, bring a full-size carry-on, and you cannot change your mind once you book. But they do have more options for higher-class fares, like Economy and Premium Plus, which are more flexible and includes such things as free seat selection, priority boarding.

And if you want the most flexibility, United’s “Flexible” or “Refundable” fares are the way to go. You can cancel or change your flights without losing your money, but you might have to pay the difference in fare if a new ticket is more expensive.

2. United Airlines Change Policy

One of the most significant changes United Airlines is rolling out is the elimination of change fees for the majority of domestic and international flights originating in the United States. Which means travelers can change their plans without being hit with a penalty.

There are exceptions, though. Basic Economy tickets are non-changeable unless in case of a travel waiver or the change is made within 24 hours of booking. For any other fare option, you may change your flight online at “United Manage Reservations” tab or by calling customer service.

When the new flight costs more, you only pay the difference in fare. If it’s cheaper, United may give you a credit for future travel that you can use for your next booking. This policy brings passengers reassurance as they are made to feel that the financial cost of making a last-minute change is lower than it was.

United also has a same-day flight change policy, which gives you the option to change to an earlier or later flight on your day of travel (space permitted). MileagePlus Premier members can sometimes receive this service for free, while other travelers may have to pay a fee.

3. United Airlines Cancellation Policy

The United Airlines 24-hour cancellation policy is a standard practice amongst most airlines these days. If you cancel your reservation less than 24 hours after booking and your flight is a week or more in the future, you’ll get a full refund to your original payment method — no questions asked.

After this period is over, the cancellation policy depends on the type of fare.

  • Getting a refund: Cancel at any time and get your money back.
  • No refunds on non-refundable tickets: but you will be credited towards another flight.
  • Basic Economy Tickets: Are generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless cancelled within the 24-hour grace period..

When United Airlines Cancel Flight or makes a major change to it, you have the right to get your money back — even if your tickets are non-refundable. That covers delays, reroutes and cancellations that are the result of the weather, technical problems or operational headaches.

4. Refunds and Travel Credits

If you cancel a qualifying United flight, you may request a refund directly via the airline website. Eligible ticket refunds are generally processed through your original form of payment within seven to 10 days if you used a credit card and 20 business days if you paid by cash or check.

Non-refundable fares For non-refundable fares, United will issue you a Future Flight Credit or an Electronic Travel Certificate. These credits are valid for one year and can be used on any United flight, not just the specific route purchased.

It’s always a good idea to confirm your travel credit’s expiration date and any related terms and conditions to make sure you hold on to its value.

5. Additional Fees and Tips

United has eliminated many traditional fees, but some still remain. Typical fees are for checked baggage, seat upgrades and travel with a pet or extra leg room. Seat selection for Basic Economy customers is subject to an additional charge, while those in Premium Plus and above cabins receive free seat selection.

Pro tip: Sign up for United’s MileagePlus frequent flyer program to save on fees, get priority boarding and rack up miles for free flights. It’s a great way to squeeze the most out of your travel — especially if you fly frequently.
